I’m Emma Weale, an independent Designer-Maker and contemporary textile artist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Working from my bright and welcoming studio at St. Margaret’s House on London Road, I specialise in traditional tapestry weaving and handwoven textile art.
Originally from Cheshire, England, I’ve called Edinburgh home for 25 years. My creative practice is rooted in a deep appreciation of a Sense of Place—whether that’s the shifting light of a city skyline or the vast beauty of expansive landscapes. I use textiles to explore how we connect to these environments, often drawing on maps and photography to capture moments in time.
Using time-honoured tapestry techniques, I create large-scale, handwoven wall hangings that can take hundreds of hours to complete. Colour, texture, and contrast are at the heart of my work, allowing each piece to tell a story or evoke memory. My creative process is immersive and hands-on, beginning with photography, drawing, painting, and paper folding.
Collaboration is a central part of my practice. I love working with clients to bring their vision to life—translating personal ideas, experiences, and emotions into tactile, one-of-a-kind textile artworks.
I hold a First-Class Honours degree in Constructed Textiles from DJCAD in Dundee (1998) and spent time studying at ACAD in Calgary, Canada, where I deepened my love for tapestry weaving.
Alongside my studio practice, I offer workshops and courses in Tapestry Weaving and Design Fundamentals—perfect for beginners and experienced creatives alike. These are run from my Edinburgh studio and can be tailored to individuals or small groups.
